Picaresque elements in the Exemplary Novels

The goal of this graduation's thesis was to focus on picaresque elements in The Exemplary Novels (Novelas ejemplares). The object of research were, therefore, ones of the most important works of the Spanish Golden Age - picaresque novels The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes (La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes) and Guzmán de Alfarache and their influence on Cervantes' literary works. We analyzed the picaresque elements, different variations of theirs' in the selected Exemplary Novels. More specifically, we dealt with the character of picaro, form of the works and a concept of realism in Alemán and Cervantes.
The morisco question in Cervantes' work

This thesis deals with the Morisco question in the work of Miguel de Cervantes. It situates the author in the historical and social context of 16th and the beginning of 17th century when Philip III of Spain had banished the Morisco community from Spanish Kingdom. It studies the influences which had impact on Cervantes' life and could be reflected in this issue. Also, all the mentions of Moors, Moriscos and Arabic culture are analized, all mentions in three pieces of Cervantes' work, the novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, the drama Los Tratos de Argel and the pastoral novel Galatea. All the mentions are divided into the chapters according the positive, objective or negative meaning in relation to the Moriscos. The analyses of each chapter create the opinion of Miguel de Cervantes of the Morisco question. The thesis discovers that the impact of coexistence of Christian and Muslim culture in Spain, his life experience and the historical expulsion of Moriscos, are considerably reflected in author's literary work. Comparison of selected Czech translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote

Thesis Comparison of selected Czech translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote Vojtěch Kolomý Abstract The aim of this thesis is to compare the last two translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote: the translation realised by Václav Černý in 1931 and the translation of Zdeněk Šmíd from 1952. Although the thesis focuses on the original versions of both translations, the later changed editions are taken into account too. The structure of the thesis is as follows: First, the thesis analyses Cervantes's original text with respect to the translation and after a short chapter about the first Czech translators of Don Quixote and their translations, it describes the translations of Černý and Šmíd and the circumstances of the genesis of both translations. Then, the core of this thesis is a detailed parallel comparison of certain passages from Don Quixote. In the final chapter, the findings are applied. Pastoril novel: between the reality and fiction

The work focuses on the study of Spanish pastoral novels presenting their two fundamentally different aspects. On the one hand, the thesis describes the idealised world of shephards living in harmony with nature, singing about their unrequited love. On the other, the work points out, that these novels also include some realistic elements, corrupting the mentioned idealism. The phenomen of madness in Don Quijote de la Mancha and its time

(in English) Initially this Bachelor Degree Thesis studies the conception of the phenomenon of madness through different centuries. It analyses the ancient tradition of the medical aspect of this concept and it also elaborates in detail its symbolism in the so-called culture of folk humor. These dimensions, which evolved mostly in the Renaissance period, are explored due to its influence on meaning of madness in the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Some other relevant pieces of art and literary works, which could have potential influence on the Cervantes' book, are also expounded. Finally, the existent interpretations of don Quixote's madness are summarized. Jerónimo de Pasamonte's Autobiography in Its Literary Context

This thesis aims to present the military autobiography of Jerónimo de Pasamonte called Jerónimo de Pasamonte's Life and Suffering finished in the XVII th century. Firstly, the genre of autobiography and its specifics are discussed, subsequently autobiographies of the XVIth and XVIIth century, such as the picaresque novel, religious and military autobiographies, are mentioned. Pasamonte's autobiography itself is discussed both formally (its language, style and structure are defined) and thematically - issues such as captivity and picaresque features within the Life are brought up. We shall study also its intention and veracity. Discussion is held about the theory that Pasamonte is the author of the fake second part of Cervantes' Quijote. Along, other topics are raised: the alike fate of Cervantes and Pasamonte or Pasamonte's being ridiculed by Cervantes in his Quijote. The aim of this thesis is to present the work of Jerónimo de Pasamonte's Life and Suffering, compare it to other contemporary genres, point out its formal and thematical characteristics and parting from acquired analysis conclude what its contribution to literature and contemporary reader is.
